THE DETOX THAT WORKS

You’ve probably considered doing a juice detox more than once and have seen the term “detox” everywhere. But is it really effective?

Research suggests that short-term detoxes, such as cleanses or juice fasts, are not particularly effective. Living a healthy life isn’t a quick fix; it’s an ongoing journey.

​

What Does a Detox Actually Mean?

​

Detoxification involves removing and minimizing potentially harmful toxins from the body and adding in health-supporting materials. Toxins refer to chemicals, heavy metals, and processed foods, which can cause issues such as bloating, skin rashes, brain fog, and hormonal imbalances. The body naturally detoxifies through the liver, kidneys, and gut. The better you take care of yourself, the better your body will be at eliminating toxins.

Most detoxes don’t work because they focus solely on cutting things out instead of bringing in health-supporting materials to optimize the body’s detoxification process. Additionally, the term “detox” has become a marketing trick used by brands to promote quick fixes like vitamins and teas, but health is more complex than what you consume.

Is There No Point in Detoxing at All?

Not quite. Consider learning how to consistently support your body’s detox processes. Imagine a way to rest and nourish your body from the inside out with tools beyond nutrition. This approach can be especially beneficial when you feel your body needs it most (for me, that’s when I experience bloating, lasting fatigue, or skin outbreaks).

Count Me In—What Do I Do?

​

It’s not complicated—just put your body back into a state where it thrives by going back to the basics of health. There’s no magic pill or secret involved; it’s about doing simple things:

​

  • Eat Well: Focus on the power of colorful plants to improve your gut health. Basic herbs and vegetables are incredibly powerful. Think about foods that are one ingredient (e.g., blueberries, salmon, almonds, quinoa).

  • Avoid Ultra-Processed Foods: High levels of saturated fat, salt, and sugar negatively affect the level of toxins in your body. Get into the habit of reading food labels when grocery shopping. Also, avoid alcohol for a while (2-4 weeks) to lower inflammation and support the liver.

  • Clear Your Mind: Detoxifying isn’t just about what we eat but also about our thoughts. Negative thoughts impact how we metabolize and heal. Become aware of negative thoughts and replace them with mindfulness and positive affirmations. Personally, journaling and affirmations have made a significant difference for me.

  • Move Your Body: Movement is as crucial as food. Choose an activity you enjoy because you’ll benefit both physically and mentally. Movement increases blood circulation and oxygen, enhancing the detoxification process.
